Steps to prepare Online invigilation (proctoring)

We've put together a step-by-step guide of what you need to do to be ready for your online invigilated exam.

  1. Download Google Chrome

If you don't already use Google Chrome web browser, you'll need to download it. You may need admin rights on your computer to do this.

  2. Download the Google Chrome Guardian secure extension

Install the Guardian extension on Google Chrome from the Google Chrome web store. Other browsers do not support the extension.

  3. Make sure you have all the equipment

You'll need a webcam for monitoring your workspace, speakers and a microphone (not built into a headset) to communicate with the invigilator if necessary. ProctorU lists the full equipment requirements on its website.

  4. Do the 'mock invigilated experience'

You'll be invited to schedule a mock invigilated experience a few weeks before your actual exam. This will give you the opportunity to experience what the room checks are like. It's highly recommended you complete this process to be fully prepared for exam day.

  5. Test your equipment

Once you have a ProctorU account, you'll be able to test your equipment. Sign in to ProctorU, and follow the link on the dashboard to Test Your Equipment.

  6. Have your photo ID ready for verification

You'll need to show this to the invigilator in the mock experience and on exam day. You may not be able to complete the exam if you don't have your photo ID ready.

  7. Schedule a time slot to begin the room checks

A few weeks before your exam, you'll be prompted by email to book a time slot to start the room checks for your exam.

  8. On exam day, sign in to your module website

You'll find a link to ProctorU and your invigilated exam under the Assessment tab of your module website. Sign in to ProctorU. Make sure you're ready a good 10 minutes before the scheduled start time.

  9. Room checks

You'll complete the room checks prompted by instructions on your screen. The invigilator will ensure you're not accessing unauthorised material and there is no-one in the room with you. The exam doesn't start until the room checks are done.

  10. Complete your exam

You'll be provided with instructions on how to upload your finished exam.
