Changes to the MSc and Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering (F46/E22)

The University is making some changes to the MSc in Engineering (F46) and the Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering (E22) from November 2019.

Any students planning to complete their studies by 31 December 2023 will not experience any changes to the modules they can count towards their qualification. However, they will need to complete their qualification within the new time limit.

The changes made

Amendment to the structure and compulsory modules

If a student plans to complete one of these qualifications after this date, they will need to complete under a new amended structure. Within the amended qualification structure, students will need to complete either Finite element analysis (T804) or Manufacture materials design (T805) plus a further 60 credits of study from a smaller selection of modules than previously offered.

As before, the final compulsory module of Stage 1 will be Team Engineering (T885) and the same entry requirements apply (where students will have to have completed the other 90 credits of study in Stage 1 before they can start T885).

Amendment to the time limit for completing the qualification

The Engineering qualifications currently operate with a module time-based rule, meaning that students can’t count the credit from a module towards the Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering (E22) once five years have elapsed since the module’s final start date.

The introduction of new consumer legislation has meant that we have reviewed our regulations and decided to no longer use module-based time rules. As a result, we are introducing a qualification time limit for these qualifications.

With immediate effect, the Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering (E22) will introduce an eight-year time limit. This means that students must complete all necessary credit towards the qualification within eight years from the date that they began studying the earliest module you have counted towards this qualification.

What this means for students

Any students intending to complete their qualification after 2023 should contact us to check their study plan and ensure their modules can still be counted towards your qualification.

If a student believes that they have been studying towards one of these qualifications above for more than eight years, or think that they may take more than eight years to complete their qualification, they may be affected by these changes. If this is the case, they should contact your Student Support Team to discuss what options are available to them.

Please talk to your Student Support Team if you need any further information. You can find out how to contact them on Contact the OU.
