Assessment Banking Rules 2016/17
Warning: the content within this page reflects the information available to students in the 2016/17 academic year. As such, this information may no longer be factually accurate.
In September 2016, policies previously published as the Assessment Banking Rules have been re-designated to make it clear to study in which academic year they apply. There are now three versions available: Please note that the 2016/17 version of the Assessment Banking Rules is designed to be used in conjunction with the 2016/17 Fee Rules, the Deferral and Withdrawal Policy 2016/17 and the Cancellation Procedure.
- Assessment Banking Rules 2012/13 to 2013/14 (Archived document)
- Assessment Banking Rules 2014/15 to 2015/16
- Assessment Banking Rules 2016/17
The Assessment Banking Rules 2014/15 to 2015/16 were also amended to remove an out of date reference to a list of modules on StudentHome and to provide revised information for students on how to check whether a module is eligible for Assessment Banking.
Students will need to use the 2016/17 version of the Assessment Banking Rules if they choose to defer any module, whether Undergraduate or Postgraduate, that started in or after August 2016 and wish to ‘bank’ and carry forward the assignment scores they have already received.
To ‘defer’ a module means that a student stops studying with the intention of returning to the same module at a later date.
To ‘bank’ an assignment scores means that a student can carry them forward to count against the assessment requirements when they resume studying their module.
The changes made
- References to specific sections of the Deferral and Withdrawals Policy have been updated to reflect the amendments that have been made to that policy.
- Students will no longer revert to ‘deferral without assessment banking’ if they do not use their ‘banked’ assessment scores within the period for which they are valid. As previously, ‘banked’ assessment scores are only valid for 13 months from the start date of the module from which students defer. If they do not re-register or re-enrol on the module within 13 months of the original start date, students will lose these scores. In the previous version of the Assessment Banking rules, once the assessment scores were no longer valid, students who had ‘deferred with assessment banking’ reverted to ‘deferred without assessment banking’ for a further 12 months. This reversion has now been removed to reflect change to validity period of fee credits in the Fee Rules (Undergraduate Study) 2016/17 and Fee Rules (Postgraduate Study) 2016/17.
- A number of editorial changes have been implemented to simplify the wording used and to improve ease of understanding.
- Whether or not a module is eligible for assessment banking is no longer visible in StudentHome. To find out whether a module is eligible for assessment banking students will need to contact their Student Support Team.
- A definition of the final deferral date for single component modules has been added.
